Stay

I feel like I could have
said the word tonight.
You were in no hurry
to leave.
Turned around
and found a reason
to talk for 30 more seconds.

Maybe if it wasn’t windy
we could have sat outside.
You’d fill me in on hockey stats
and I you on my siblings’ drama,
while the boys cooked us supper:
dirt soup and dirt cake.

Did you lose your sunglasses?
Every time I see you,
I scan every visible inch
to see if you’re different.
Nothing new have I found lately.

I can faintly smell
the cigarettes and motor oil.
Damn, I miss you.
More today than yesterday, always.
